BE SUN WISE: Protect yourself and your family this December.

Munnik Marais, the corporate relationship manager for the association, explained why it is so vital to be aware of the seriousness of protecting our skins during the summer months. “People always flock to the beaches in the December holidays and forget about the safety and their health,” he said.

According to Marais, CANSA has taken upon the responsibility to raise awareness about skin cancer and the dangers of it, as well as how we can prevent developing the disease.

“Cancer has no race, no age, no sex, no economic background, it can happen to anyone at any time,” said Marais. He went on to say it is vital to protect ourselves from ultraviolet radiation, This is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. These rays from the sun can reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days.

He stated that the association will be hosting various cancer check points at beaches across the country where the community can get screened for free.

Marais provides a few tips:

• Avoid the sun during the middle of the day.

• Wear sunscreen year-round.

• Wear protective clothing.

• Avoid tanning beds.

• Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications.

• Avoid being out during 1pm and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest.

• Check your skin regularly and report changes to your doctor.
