Fourways High School pupil ups her hockey skills

Fourways High School's, Pearl Witkoei, is in need of funds for a hockey tour to the Netherlands.

Pearl Witkoei, who attends Fourways High School and is the daughter of Diepsloot Police Station’s chief administrator, Hellen Witkoei, is in need of funds for a hockey tour to the Netherlands in September.

Pearl (14) plays hockey at school and was playing U14 A team for Southern Gauteng last year. She was invited independently with 13 other players to tour the Netherlands and the team will also attend an 11-day training and skills development programme to give the girls exposure on an international level. They will be travelling with their coach of last year and tour mother.

When asked how she felt about being selected to go overseas, Pearl said, “I feel very happy because it is going to be my first time flying and going overseas. And [we are going] to a country which has the best hockey skills in the world.”

She added that she used to mainly play soccer in primary school but did play hockey for one term in Grade 2. “So when I got to high school, I had hoped to play soccer but to my dismay, there was no soccer and that is when I decided to play hockey because I knew the basics.”

Witkoei was chosen to attend district trials and was selected for the D10 A team. “I was quite nervous, then I saw that I was selected in D10 A, [and then I progressed] to Southern Gauteng trials and the next thing I was in the A team. Then we went to our tournament and we won gold which I am proud of as it gave me hope for playing hockey.”

She said hockey was a fun and exciting sport and every time she practised, she learnt new skills and tricks. “I also get support from my family, coaches [both at school and provincial level] and teammates.”

Pearl hoped to be playing for the SA national team in five years’ time and also one day being a coach. “I would also like to encourage black people to play hockey and to also encourage companies and the government to sponsor hockey.”
