Silo collapse leads to loadshedding – Eskom

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger

“The silo ruptured or cracked and so employees were evacuated… and it just collapsed,” Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger said.

“The conveyer belt systems, which feeds coal to the power station, were damaged and therefore we can’t get coal into the power station.”

The collapse resulted in Eskom losing 1800MW.

The parastatal also warned that the blackouts could last into nest week and blackouts would happen between 8am and 10pm.

In a statement Johannesburg’s City Power said they has been asked to cut back on 460MW.

A load-shedding schedule is available here.
