What to do if your car breaks down on the highway

In a perfect world, the possibility of your vehicle breaking down would be considered impossible but in reality, chances are it might… and if it does what will you do?

In a scenario like this, most people are likely to unconsciously slip into a total state of panic, especially if they do not have any tools or are just plain clueless when it comes to troubleshooting car problems. The best way to curb this dilemma is to ensure you remain calm in order to think logically as to what steps to take.

The following steps are to be followed should you find yourself in such an unfortunate and unforeseen situation:

  • At the first sign of car trouble, remain calm and carefully make your way towards the emergency lane. If you need to change lanes, watch your mirrors and the traffic around you closely. If the road does not have an emergency lane, safely move the car as far off the road as possible.
  • Pull up your handbrake, and switch on your hazard lights.
  • Getting out of your car can put you in danger of being hit by oncoming traffic. Only if it is safe to do so, position a reflective triangle a good distance behind the car. By law, you are required to carry at least one emergency triangle for times like these.
  • Keep your windows closed and your doors locked.
  • If your car has a flat tyre, don’t try to change it until you can get to the side of the road. Only attempt to change it if the flat tyre is on the side of the vehicle that is not facing traffic.
  • Alert friends or family members who may have been expecting you at a certain time and explain your situation to them.

It is important to make sure that you have enough airtime and sufficient battery power on your cell phone to carry out the last step. That’s why it is crucial for you to have portable accessories such as a USB charger, with you at ALL TIMES!

After exhausting the above mentioned steps, you may need to consider calling your insurance road assistance to come to your rescue. In the end, it’s always better to be prepared than to have regrets! Having car insurance will ease your stress and ensure that you are guaranteed the peace of mind that you rightfully deserve.
