Spur Montrose Night Challenge champions crowned at finals

The Spur Montrose Night Challenge reached a nail-biting finish courtesy of a sensational knock by GCB Lions player, Tshepo Staffa in an entertaining final against Dainfern College at Montrose Primary School in Sandton.

Staffa’s outstanding effort of 100 not out, ensured that his side powered their way to a maiden championship victory in the competition.

And for his resounding individual performance in the final, Staffa was presented with the Cutty Man of the Match award, together with the Man of the Series accolade for his overall performance in the tournament.

The challenge, now in its 14th year, made for an exciting seven weeks of cricket and netball action. The event pitted schools from Sandton, Bryanston, Dainfern and Fourways against one another, and saw teams compete for the coveted championship title, which the winning team lays claim to for an entire year.

According to tournament organisers, the event is the only T20 style, inter-primary cricket and netball competition in the country, and provides an important platform for young boys and girls to hone their skills and develop their talents. The teams play weekly matches that start from 2pm and continue late into the evening.

The competition is the only T20 style inter-primary cricket and netball challenge in the country.

The tournament also provides the Alex Schools Development team and the GCB Lions team the opportunity to shine and most importantly, a platform to gain exposure for their talents.

The netball games offered just as much excitement, and saw equally impressive achievements being recorded. The eventual winner of the U11 netball tournament was Bryanston Primary School, while Redhill School claimed honours in the open segment.

The 2017 Spur Montrose Night Challenge final was celebrated in style on March 10 at Montrose Primary School.
