Leeuwkop celebrates women who serve and protect

Women participate in an aerobics class during the Leeuwkop Prison's Women's Day celebrations.

The women who work at Leeuwkop Prison celebrated Women’s Month on 31 August with a variety of fun activities which included prayer, aerobics, a fun run and a lovely spring lunch with a lot of laughter.

Women’s Month is commemorated in South Africa in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of pass laws to women.

Marietjie Badenhorst, Rita Venter, Marga Esterhuizen and Marita Basson, enjoy Leeuwkop Prison’s celebrations for Women’s Day.

Lindiwe Simelani and Mpho Thwala enjoy the Women’s Day celebrations.

The spokesperson for Leeuwkop Prison, Sanku Thsuke said, “We are happy to host a day that celebrates the women of Leeuwkop. They work hard and dedicate their lives to serving. I just hope they felt special and enjoyed the day.”
