Paving a future through reading

Solomon Modiba, English teacher, is passionate about teaching literacy. Here he assists Nqobile Letlaltsa, Elizabeth Sefularo and Lorraine Moyo.

Montecasino and Fourways Review came together to emphasise the importance of reading and recently delivered new books and crossword puzzle books to Paradise Bend Primary School.

Lisa Sukdev, Montecasino’s public relations manager said, “Literacy is the foundation of learning and with a high proportion of schools in disadvantaged areas lacking libraries, it is important to try to make a difference to those learners’ lives.

“It is a privilege to be able to contribute to improving literacy in local disadvantaged communities. This initiative is not merely a token gesture. Next year, students will submit book reviews on a monthly basis for a R200 reward and to have their review published in the Fourways Review.”

Solomon Modiba, English teacher and library coordinator at the school, makes sure that children are involved in literary activities such as the Johannesburg Northern District Spelling Bee.

Lisa Sukdev from Montecasino, Solomon Modiba from Paradise Bend Primary School and Daniella Potter, group editor for Caxton Joburg North, celebrate the encouragement of literacy.

Montecasino, Fourways Review and Paradise Bend Primary School are excited about their new venture.

Modiba said reading is applied in every single subject, including mathematics. “Reading empowers learners to do better in all academics aspects,” said Modiba.

He encouraged the community to come to the school and observe what teachers do.

The books were collected in a book drive run by Montecasino and Skoobs Theatre of Books in honour of World Literacy Month in September and were donated by staff members, guests and the public at a depository located at Skoobs.
