In a bid to address hunger in the community and alleviate poverty through providing food to children in under-resourced schools, Thulani Mzinyane, also known as DJ Dash, founder of Feed a Child Feed a Nation initiative shared that the initiative supports a school in Diepsloot.
Among other schools that they support in Johannesburg, Diepsloot Primary School number four received meals thanks to one of their sponsors, ChickenXpress, last month.
Mzinyane established the initiative in 2012 as he organises events with clubs in Durban and approaches different DJs and artists to come and perform for free. “The money made at those events is used to buy food parcels and donated to different schools around KwaZulu-Natal.”
He explained that last year, the initiative partnered with the ChickenXpress franchise to feed over 360 children around uMlazi, Pietermaritzburg, Clermont and Chesterville and this year will see them going to other provinces like Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape to donate more burgers and chips to children.
Last year the initiative ran a campaign to collect blankets and toiletries to be donated to street children around Clermont and Pietermaritzburg. “With the guidance of teachers, we identify children in those schools that are most impacted by poverty – those who don’t know where or when they will get their next meal.”
Mzinyane concluded that this year they aimed to feed over 20 000 children around the country as last year alone they managed to feed over 2 000 children in primary schools in townships.
