Africa Month celebrated at Summit College

A Bantwana Besikole performance.

Acknowledging one’s culture and the beauty it possesses was the purpose of Summit College’s second annual African Evening in commemoration of Africa Month.

The evening saw the learners showcase the various cultural aspects and performances such as drumming, isiZulu and Xitsonga traditional dances, poetry, stick-fighting, snake-dancing and gumboot dancing.

“We enjoyed a performance of Bantwana Besikole by our school teacher, Jean Miller and four learners who also got the parents to sing along,” the college’s Annah Vilakazi said.

Vilakazi added that dancing and ululations were the highlights of the evening as the Grade 2s stole the show with their traditional Xitsonga dance. “No one could compete with their cuteness in those bright outfits and their highly energised dancing. A special thank you goes out to Dainfern College for amazing performances by their Marimba band as well as a song by Chichi.”

She concluded that the day ended with a dance by the staff and parents dressed in traditional wear. “Attendees also enjoyed a special African meal made by the parents as their way to give them a taste of Africa. It was definitely a special evening.”
